A weekly devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb
Once again the country is reeling from the shooting rampage inside a Navy building on Monday in Washington, D.C., that left twelve dead and over a dozen injured. Everyone is weighing in with their opinions on what could have been done to prevent the tragedy. But all of the speculation fails to address the real issue. What is wrong with man? What is evil? Where does evil come from? These are some of the questions that every worldview must seek to answer. The Bible confronts this matter head on when it diagnoses man’s problem with these words, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
The message of the Bible is not just that humanity is desperately sick but that the cure for what is wrong is found in the great physician, Jesus Christ. The transforming truth of the good news of Jesus Christ must be personally acknowledged and received by faith. When that occurs, we become a new creation and our heart is changed and evil no longer has power over us.
Although improved security and better screening will probably result from this week’s crisis, it will not solve the problem because it fails to address the heart of the matter. The deepest part of our being needs to be removed and replaced with a new heart and mind. That’s a problem that only a holy, compassionate, and gracious God can solve and He has!
