A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb
Sitting from the desk in my home office, I can look out my window and see a variety of colorful birds enjoying the food which I place in their feeder every few days. This food is crucial to their survival. Yet, I am certain that they are unaware of my diligence in providing it for them. Whenever I watch the birds busily eating, I am reminded of the words Jesus delivered to His disciples in one of His first public sermons. In the Sermon on the Mount, possibly given on a ridge of hills overlooking the Sea of Galilee, Jesus said, “Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” This powerful object lesson was intended to remind the disciples that the beauty and design of creation points to the reality of a loving and caring Creator.
Although the birds in my backyard may be oblivious to who is providing for their needs, there is no excuse for those who have been created in the image of God. Take some time this week to just stare out the window and reflect on God’s providence to His children through Christ Jesus our Lord. You’ll be glad you did!
