A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb
In Japan, there is a current fascination with watching moss grow and spread. Enthusiasts will hike up the Japan Alps for moss tours, purchase moss packages at resorts, and host theme parties honoring the different varieties of moss. Growth can be exciting to watch, not just in nature but, in those who have confessed Christ as their Savior and Lord.
In the opening chapter of 2 Peter we read “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.” These Christian character traits are to be increasingly evident in our lives validating, to ourselves and others, that our personal faith is genuine. Our excitement, however, is not just in our own growth but also in watching and assisting our brothers and sisters as they too acquire these Christian virtues!
When was the last time you got excited over the spiritual growth taking place in your life or that of another person in your church family? If the angels in heaven rejoice over one sinner who repents, shouldn’t we get excited over the work God is doing in us and in others? This week, evaluate your level of spiritual growth and make an effort to assist someone else in their walk with the Lord. You will discover that it is far more exciting and rewarding than watching moss grow!
