A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb
For the second week in a row, another mass shooting in the U.S. has headlined the news, first in Colorado and now in California. It seems like every week there is another random act of violence that forever changes the lives of the victim’s family and friends. News like this shouldn’t take Christians by surprise because the Scriptures teach that the world will become increasing evil in the last days. Instead, it should heighten our passion to share the good news of Christ with a world living in darkness and despair.
The celebration of Christmas, is a reminder that Christ’s first coming, and His future return, is the best news a person can receive. In the gospel of Luke, the angel of the Lord proclaimed to the shepherds out in the fields, “…I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” This timeless announcement not only sent the shepherds running to see the new born king, but filled them with a boldness to tell others what they had seen and heard. The celebration of Christmas is a reminder that Christ’s first coming, and His future return, is the best news a person can receive in this world.
When the next story headline breaks, good or bad, remember that nothing surpasses that first announcement made to the shepherds and now to each one of us by Jesus Christ. Like the shepherds, run and spread the message of Christ! Don’t keep the greatest news story to yourself this Christmas!
