A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb
The deadliest terrorist attack in Brussels this week has airports and public transportation on high alert in the European Union and in most major cities in the United States. As the investigation continues, Belgium authorities find themselves responding to criticism that security and surveillance methods were partly to blame for not stopping the terrorist plot before it was hatched. Living in a dangerous world is now a reality that we must all be prepared for.
We tend to heed words of warning better when they come from one who has survived a devastating attack. In 1 Peter 5:8, appropriately thirty years after his own three-fold denial of Jesus before the crucifixion, the Apostle Peter warned us to, “Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” In this present age, Christians encounter spiritual attacks regularly and, therefore, need a mind that is well balanced and saturated with the Word of God. Clothed in our spiritual armor we will be alert and able to stand firm in the faith through the power of prayer and God’s Word.
As we remember to pray for the families of those affected by Tuesday’s attack, may it also remind us that the followers of Christ must be on high alert everyday. But, unlike the war on terrorism, this war has already been won when our enemy was defeated at the cross.
