A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb
As we approach July 4th weekend, Tuesday’s terrorism attack at an airport in Turkey is a reminder of not only how our world has changed but also of the high cost of protecting our freedom in a dangerous world. As the international landscape continues to wrestle with how to counter terrorist activity, the value and appreciation of freedom for all people takes on even greater importance.
For the Christian, there is the added dimension of recalling that Christ set us free from the penalty of sin and death. In John 8:36 Jesus said, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Our new found spiritual freedom comes with many responsibilities. Forgiveness of sin is not a license for us to live however we want. Instead, we have been set free to be servants of Jesus Christ and to be used by Him to deliver this message to those who remain in bondage, not just nationally, but spiritually. So, this 4th of July, as you celebrate your freedom let others know why you are free indeed!
