New and Improved?

A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb

The newest iPhone was released yesterday and Apple is hoping it will help rejuvenate their last quarter sales.  As Apple rolls out its latest iPhone, they also announced that next year’s 10th anniversary edition will feature even more amazing changes.  So, why would anyone purchase the newest iPhone when, even before it even hits the stores, the company is saying next year’s model will be even better?  Although we live in a culture where many think that new and improved means better, is there anything perfect just the way it is?

The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Christians, many of whom were struggling in their faith, as they lived in a rapidly changing world where persecution was on the rise.  Rather than offering a false sense of security or an empty promise, the writer reassurances them of the immutability of God.  Immutability refers to the unchanging nature and character of God.  Hebrews 13:8 tells us that, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  Therefore, in a world where new and improved does not mean perfect or even better, Christians can depend on the unchanging perfection of Christ Jesus and the truth of His Word!  There is nothing better than that!
