According to a nationwide survey, the average Fitbit user lost 4.2 minutes of sleep following the first presidential debate. Another poll showed that over half of U.S. adults are experiencing higher levels of stress due to the polarizing presidential campaign. Although it is important to be an educated voter, and to vote one’s conscience, should we be losing sleep over the anticipated results?
The Old Testament book of Daniel features the rise and fall of the Babylonians at the hands of the Medo-Persian Empire. But, the message delivered by God through Daniel is that His people, presently exiled in Babylon, have nothing to fear. For the LORD will deliver those who put their trust in Him and learn to walk by faith and not by sight. In Daniel 2:21 we read, “He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” The people of Israel were to trust in the sovereignty of the LORD and His control over all of history and the events in the world.
So, no matter what the results of Tuesday’s election, remember that our security and peace are not derived from an elected official but from being in a right relationship with the eternal, omnipotent, and Sovereign God!
