Are You Living in Fear?

A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb

Monday’s attack at Ohio State University sounded all too familiar.  In its wake at least eleven people were injured and the assailant was shot dead by a campus police officer.  The President of the university addressed the media after the attack and said, “We all live with the fear that things like this could happen to us.”  Although true, these words offer little comfort and assurance to those students still on campus or those recovering in the hospital from their wounds.  However well intended, there must be something more that can and should address our fears and concerns.

In Matthew 10, Jesus prepared His disciples for living out their faith by telling them they would experience trials and persecution.  Yet, in the same breath, Jesus commanded them to not live in fear since they know the Father and the Father knows them.  As Christians, we take comfort in Christ’s words that, “…even the very hairs of our head are all numbered.  So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”  Since God’s providence and sovereignty extends to one of the smallest and most common creatures, we may rest assured that there is no better place to be than in a loving, personal relationship with Him.

There is no doubt we live in a dangerous world.  However, the children of God do not need to live in fear of what could happen.   Therefore, boldly go and share the good news and assurance of Christ with someone who desperately needs it this week!
