You’re Being Watched

A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb

China has gone high tech in an effort to track the daily life of its people.  Facial-recognition is now being used not just at security check points, but on streets and in subway stations.  Ms. Gan was recently caught on camera illegally crossing a busy street. The facial recognition system immediately red flagged her and a text message flashed on the crosswalk sign saying, “repeat offender.”  According to the Chinese Ministry of Public Safety, the goal of this technology is to create an “…omnipresent, completely connected, always on and fully controllable” system of surveillance which will influence and change public behavior in a positive way.

The Bible speaks of God’s omnipresence and omniscience.  This means that God transcends all spatial limitations and is present in every place with His entire being.  And, He also has perfect knowledge of all things in creation, including our actions and private thoughts.  In Jeremiah 23:24, the LORD declares, “Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?  Do not I fill heaven and earth?”  If we are living contrary to God’s Word, recognizing these attributes should prompt us to return to Him as quickly as possible so we will not experience God’s judgment.  However, if we have a personal relationship with God and are obeying Him, these same attributes will be the source of much comfort and encouragement.

It is true that people typically do behave better when they know someone is watching.  The next time you cross the street or think you are completely alone, remember that God recognizes more than just your face.  He knows everything about you.  This is not an invasion of your privacy, but a precious truth that should transform how every Christian goes about their daily life.
