A devotional by Reverend Dr. Kevin Schwamb
After a summer of working or enjoying the company of friends and family, thousands of college students have returned to campus. The excitement of being back at school will soon be met by the reality that it is time to get to work. Lectures, lattes, and studying for exams will soon fill up their week and consume every waking thought. Life at times seems to be one test after another.
In the gospel of Matthew, we read of a Pharisee (an expert in the Law) who attempted to test Jesus by asking Him, “…which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Without hesitation, Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” The noun mind embraces a person’s reason, understanding, and disposition. Faith in Christ embraces not only our purchase from sin, but also the redeeming of our intellect and reason. Therefore, following Jesus must include the right use of our minds.
The start of another academic year is the perfect opportunity to remember the importance of learning and the value of a good education. However, no education is complete unless it teaches us how to love God with every part of our being — including our heads!
